Allentown Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: Do skunks swim?

Skunks are one of the many animals that most people see at least once in their life. They tend to be characterized as being adorable names, but at the same time they can be extremely deadly. Since we may see skunks very often, we tend to question many things about their living situations. One question that gets asked a lot is if they can swim. A simple answer is that they can swim in the Olympics if they want too! However, they hit getting in the water since they hate the thought of getting wet.

The reason they are so good in water is because they are actually real fast animals, they reach around 17 km/h at times! Another reason they hate the water is because it may be cold most of the time, which is why they do not like winter as well. They prefer to be cooped up in some sunny area for the rest of their lives. People may find this strange since they believe their fur can keep them cold, and that may be true but it is something about the weather that makes them hate to be in it. This is why they tend to find dens where they can stay in throughout the whole winter time. Another reason they hate the winter is because they cannot eat properly when they are cooped up in the den, thus their body uses their old fat for energy. However if they need to go and get food, they will because they have great instincts of survival.

One of the most astonishing objectives about skunks is that they have five toe prints, which not most animals do. This may be the secret to their fast swimming, running and everything else, which seems to be an important aspect for them. Skunks are usually stripped (black and white) and prefer to live on land far away from any old or water that may occur as well as being near humans. But if they need to or feel like it, they will actually go for a swim! Once they find their home, they make it an area which they will feel at home for the rest of their lives. Overall in their living situation they can learn everything on their own because they can be very independent animals. They know how to exploit all the objectives surrounding them to make it a better place for them to live in.

Even though skunks do not like the water, they do tend to swim at times. They usually do so to feel relaxed as well as bored and want a bath. They either lie on their back or make their feet into a comb web as slowly move around in the water until they are relaxed. This may be dangerous at times since they do not have a good sense of smell, sight or even hearing therefore they cannot tell if there is anything in the water. But if you have a pet that you want to teach how to swim, it can simply be done in the bathtub! You never know, before you now it they can start loving the water!
